Who we are
Knight Shift is run by Get Off My Lawn (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what we collect when you use Knight Shift, why we collect it, who sees it, and the choices you have. We decide how your information is used, so under data protection laws we're its controller.
Questions about your data? Write to [email protected].
What we collect
- Your account. Your email address. Knight Shift has no passwords: we email you a code each time you sign in. If you sign in with Google, Microsoft or Lichess instead, that site tells us your name, your email address and its ID for your account (and, from Lichess, your username). We keep only those, and none of that site's keys to your account there.
- Your chess accounts and games. The chess.com and Lichess usernames you give us, and the public games of those accounts, which we download from those sites: every kind, blitz, bullet and daily included. Also the PGN files you upload. Games hold what any game record holds: the players' names and ratings, the event, place and date, the moves and the clock times.
- What you do in Knight Shift. Your answers in your Blunderbuss drill, your progress, first tries, drill rating and streaks, and your settings, such as your look, sound and language.
- The email we send you. Each email we send (the address and what it says) is kept for 7 days, so we can see it went out, and then deleted.
- The waitlist. If you join it, your email address and when you joined.
- Technical information. Like any website, our servers and Cloudflare, which delivers and protects the site, handle your IP address and browser details to send you pages and to stop abuse. Our web server keeps access logs with IP addresses for a short time, to fight abuse and fix problems. Knight Shift's own logs record errors and slow pages, without your IP address.
Beyond what's listed here, we don't ask for your address, your phone number or payment details, and we don't gather information about you from anywhere else.
How we use it
- To run Knight Shift: to find the blunders in your games, build your drill from them, schedule your reviews and show you your stats.
- To sign you in and keep your account safe.
- To email you sign-in codes and tell you when your drill is ready. We don't send marketing email unless you ask for it.
- To keep Knight Shift working: to spot errors, stop abuse and make it better.
Chess positions, and the engine's analysis of them, are facts about chess, not about you. We store each position once and reuse its analysis for every player, without anything that links it to you.
We don't sell or rent personal information, we don't use it for advertising, and we don't share it for advertising that follows you around the web.
Signing in with Google or Microsoft
If you sign in with Google or Microsoft, we receive your name, your email address and that company's ID for your account, and we use them only to sign you in and to write to you about your account. We don't use them for advertising, we don't sell them, and we don't let anyone else read them.
Knight Shift's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
How long we keep it
- Your account, games and progress: until you delete them or your account.
- Email we've sent: 7 days.
- Backups: we copy the database every night and keep the last 7 nightly copies, plus a few made before upgrades until newer ones replace them. Something you delete disappears from the backups as they're replaced.
Your choices and rights
- Take it with you. “Download my data”, at the bottom of the Bring in your games page, gives you a file with your games and everything of yours, any time.
- Delete it. “Delete my account”, on the same page, deletes your account, your progress and settings, and your games, except games another player here also has, who keeps their own copy.
- Correct it. You can change the accounts your games come from, and say which side of a game was yours. For anything else, write to us.
Depending on where you live (the European Union, the United Kingdom, California and other states), the law may give you the right to see, correct, delete or take a copy of your information, to object to or limit how we use it, and to complain to a data protection authority. We give these rights to everyone, wherever they live, and we won't treat you any differently for using them. Write to [email protected]; we answer within 30 days.
For readers in the EU and UK: we use your information to provide the service you signed up for (a contract), for our legitimate interests in keeping Knight Shift secure and working well, to meet legal obligations, and with your consent where we ask for it.
Where your data is
Knight Shift's servers are in the United States, and Cloudflare's network delivers its pages around the world. If you use Knight Shift from outside the United States, your information is transferred to and stored in the United States.
Keeping it safe
Every page comes over an encrypted connection. With no passwords, there are none to steal. Our pages load nothing from other sites, only a few people can reach our servers, and the database is backed up every night. No system is perfect, though: if a breach ever affects your information, we'll tell you as the law requires.
Children
Knight Shift is for people 13 and older. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you think a child under 13 has an account, write to [email protected] and we'll delete it. We hope to welcome younger players with a parent's consent one day, and this policy will change before we do.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes, we'll post the new one here with a new date. If a change matters, such as a new use of your information, we'll tell you in Knight Shift or by email before it takes effect.
