This agreement
These Terms are an agreement between you and Get Off My Lawn (“we”, “us”), which runs Knight Shift. By using Knight Shift you agree to them and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use Knight Shift.
Who can use it
- You must be 13 or older.
- If you're under the age of majority where you live (in Alabama that's 19), a parent or guardian must agree to these Terms for you.
- One account per person, with an email address that's yours. You're responsible for what happens in your account, so keep your email safe: that's where your sign-in codes go.
What Knight Shift does
Knight Shift brings in your games, has the Stockfish chess engine check them, and turns the blunders you made into drills in Blunderbuss, with reviews spaced out over time. We keep improving it, so features may be added, changed or removed. We work to keep it running, but we can't promise it will always be available or free of mistakes.
Your chess accounts and games
- Add only chess.com and Lichess usernames that are yours. If someone proves that a username is theirs (by signing in with that site, for example), we may give it to them and take it off your account.
- Upload only files you have the right to share. The records of games you played, at a tournament or anywhere else, are fine.
- You keep whatever rights you have in your games and files. You let us store, copy, analyse and show them to you, as running Knight Shift for you needs. That permission ends when you delete them or your account, once our backups have been replaced.
- Chess positions, and the engine's analysis of them, are facts about chess: we keep them and reuse them for every player, without anything that identifies you.
Fair play
Knight Shift is for training between games. Don't use it, or anything it tells you, while you're playing a game, rated or not, online or over the board. Chess sites and tournaments forbid that, and they may close your account or ban you from events if you do.
Using it fairly
Please don't:
- break the law, or help anyone else to;
- use someone else's account, or try to get at other players' data;
- copy Knight Shift's content in bulk with scripts or bots, overload it, or get around its limits or its security;
- take Knight Shift apart to copy it, except as the law allows, or resell it;
- upload anything harmful, such as viruses.
The engine's analysis
Stockfish is one of the strongest chess engines there is, but its evaluations are estimates. They can be wrong, and your drills follow them. Knight Shift is a training aid: we can't promise it will raise your rating.
Plans and payments
Knight Shift has a free plan and a paid one, Plus. Plus isn't on sale yet; when it is, these terms apply to it:
- You'll see the price and what's included before you pay. Payments go through a payment processor, whose own terms also apply.
- Plus renews at the end of each period until you cancel. You can cancel any time, and Plus stays until the end of the period you've paid for.
- Payments aren't refundable, except where the law says otherwise. If something went wrong, write to us and we'll put it right.
- We'll tell you before a price changes. A new price applies from your next renewal.
Other sites
chess.com, Lichess, Google and Microsoft are separate companies. Knight Shift isn't affiliated with them or endorsed by them, their own terms govern your accounts with them, and their names are their owners' trademarks.
What's ours
Knight Shift's name, look and software belong to us, apart from the open-source parts, which come under their own licences: Stockfish, for one, is free software under the GNU General Public License, version 3.
Leaving, and being asked to leave
- You can delete your account any time, at the bottom of the Bring in your games page. Download your data first if you'd like to keep it.
- We may suspend or close an account that breaks these Terms or puts Knight Shift or other players at risk. We'll tell you why, unless the law or someone's safety stops us.
- If we ever close Knight Shift, we'll tell you at least 30 days before, so you can download your data.
No guarantees
As far as the law allows, Knight Shift comes “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, including that it's fit for a particular purpose, accurate, or always working.
Limits on our liability
As far as the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses, or for lost data, profits or rating points. Our total liability to you for anything to do with Knight Shift is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and 50 US dollars. Some places don't allow these limits; where they don't, they apply only as far as the law there allows.
The law, and disputes
If something goes wrong, write to us first: most problems can be settled that way, and we'll try for 30 days. These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Alabama, in the United States, and any dispute goes to the state or federal courts there. If you're a consumer living somewhere that gives you the right to go to your own courts, or the protection of your own laws, these Terms don't take that away.
Changes to these Terms
When these Terms change, we'll post them here with a new date. If a change matters, we'll tell you in Knight Shift or by email at least 14 days before it takes effect, unless it's needed sooner for legal or safety reasons. Using Knight Shift after a change means you accept it.
Everything else
These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about Knight Shift. If a court finds part of them unenforceable, the rest still stands. If we don't enforce a part right away, we haven't given it up. You can't hand your account to someone else; we may hand these Terms on to whoever takes over Knight Shift.
